May. 22nd, 2007 05:35 pmSo last night = slumber party extravaganze with Danielle, Chloe, and Emily. Went to bed about 2:30am planning to get up at 8:00am to make French toast. Didn't happen.
Chloe, Danielle and myself had planned to go to the American Girl Place for a job fair. I'd been unsure about applying for job because I'm only going to be here until mid_july and then I'm going home for a few weeks, but I figured it was worth a shot.
Chloe ended up bailing (but she already has two jobs and really doesn't need anymore). So Danielle and I got there and saw a line of people outside waiting to get in. Shit. We approached the girl who was handing out the position(s) information and asked what position we were interested in. I had forgotten American Girl Place had a theater, but I figured that would be the best choice (as an usher or a child actor supervisor). So we waited in the Theater/Visual line. We ended up talking to wht girl beihnd us (Denise) who was there for a Visual position. Turns out she had just come from Arizona (where she was attending school) to Columbia for art.
After a while, Danielle decided to switch into the cafe line because she felt her resume had her as being better suited for that. A few minutes after she switched, someone came out and told us the theater positions had been filled. I figured I'd just switch to the cafe lin as well.
When I went to the first person, she talked to me about availabililty, skills, and if I'd be there all summer. I was honest and told her that I wasn't sure about my housing at this point and would likely leave mid-July. She said, "Well, we are looking for people who will be here all summer...but you seem very sweet and friendly, so I'll pass you on."
I then had to fill out another form and wait to talk with the cafe supervisor. She was friendly and asked the average "interview questions" (i.e. "Name a time in a previous job when you went above and beyond"). She didn't ask me anything about how long I'd be here. She just said, "Well, I need to do the paper work, but we can have you come in for training on June 6th, if that's ok."
Me:...Did I just get a job?
Apparently I did. Denise (girl we met in line) also got a job as a doll hairstylist (yes, they have an area where you can bring your doll to get her hair styled). Danielle was interviewed by the cafe supervisor and was told they really wanted her, but her availability made it hard (she has a job at Navy Pier already) but she'd try and get her own.
So I'm going to be making $9.20 an hour. Woot!
