So I've been a part of fandom for a few years, and I've specifically been a part of the NCIS fandom for about four years. I joined the NFA - an NCIS fanfiction site - and quickly made friends with so many wonderful and creative people.

Today I found out that one of those people - a woman who was one of the most kind and welcoming people I've ever known - had passed away this week. And I'm stunned. She was someone I considered myself very close to (even if we've never met) and someone who always put a smile on my face. She was a talent writer, a great friend, and one of the most hardworking moderators on the board.

She wasn't young. She wasn't even the first person from this community to pass away. And yet I still feel like it's a mistake, like she's really still alive. I can't stop crying over it and it's hard to really talk to someone about it because I feel like it sounds so silly. I mean, this was someone I knew over the internet. How did I manage to make such a close connection with her?

Furthermore, I know that she didn't really have any family (parents and sibling are dead and she didn't have a spouse or children) and I so I can't stop wondering who is making the arrangements? Who is making sure she is getting a proper burial? I'm sure it's whomever contacted our community to let us know...at least I hope it is. I just feel like I want to do something to make sure she gets a burial and that people show up to honor her.

I hadn't even talked to her for a while since I had been a bit more absent from the community these past couple of weeks and now I feel like I should have been there more.

I only hope she knew how much she meant to be and the others in the community.

About time since the one I'm using is about seven six years old.

The show is coming along slowly but surely, as are classes. My thesis is coming along even more slowly, unfortunately. I know I'm making a bigger deal of it than I need to, but I feel like I can't wrap my head around what I'm trying to say.

Day 5

In your own space, share something non-fannish you are passionate about with your fannish friends. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, most people who know me know this, but I've got a huge passion for theater, especially musical theater. I've been doing musicals since I was in elementary school and even studied it in college (most uselesss degree ever, but I regret nothing!) I try to be as involved in theater as I can - even if I'm stage managing or running lights - and try to see as much of it as I can.

In fact, I have an audition today for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

So I am taking the advice and reccing works that I feel have not received the recognition they deserve for various reasons. Unfortunately, most of my fandom experience is limited to fanfiction, fanvids, and, on occasion, fanart, so that's going to make-up the majority of my recs.

Title: A Race to the Finish
Type of Work: Fanfiction (Newsies)
Why I'm Reccing It: In the Newsies fandom fanfiction it dominated by two groups: the slashers and the hetters. I have written both slash and het for this fandom (mostly slash) and appreciate both. But what I really love is a good gen fic, and this is a good one. The characterization is spot on, the story is strong, and the writing is just beautiful. The author really captures the feel of 1899 New York and what it would have felt like for a newsboy like Racetrack to deal with what he does in this. It's one chapter (a long chapter, though - 15,000 words!) and only about 8 reviews.

Title: McGeek
Type of Work: Fan Video (NCIS)
Why I'm Reccing It: I'm a huge fan of McGee on NCIS. Don't get me wrong; I love all of the characters, but Timothy McGee is my favorite. Unfortunately, he's not the most popular character, so fan videos of his tend to get less attention. This one is one of my favorites because I love the song chosen and think it kind of shows a progression in his character.

Title: Jimmy Palmer and Tim McGee
Type of Work: Fan Video (NCIS(
Why I'm Reccing It: Same as above, really. I love Tim and Jimmy and appreciate this video for showcasing their characters. Once again, the song selection is great!

Title: Let there be dragons
Type of Work: Fanfiction (NCIS/X-Files)
Why I'm Reccing It: You know how you have those writers who may not be the best writers technically (grammer, spelling, etc.) but who you can see have the raw talent? That's this writer and this is one of her best completed stories (though I do recommend reading A Wooden Jacket for Armless John as well, but it's a WIP). She sometimes has shaky grammar and punctuation (but English is also her second language), but the stories she can create are so fabulous that it doesn't bother me. This one is particularly great and I read it even though it was an NCIS crossover with The X-Files and I've never watched the latter. The characters are developed and the world she creates pulls you in. This story has 35 chapters and has only 33 reviews (less than one review per chapter).

Title: Frappucino Kisses
Type of Work: Fanfiction (Newsies)
Why I'm Reccing It: I'm a big fan of strange pairings. I always like finding the pairings that aren't as popular within a fandom. In the Newsies fandom you've got Jack/David, Blink/Mush, Skittery/Snitch, Spot/Racetrack, and Dutchy/Specs as the biggest slash pairings in the fandom. There are also some secondary pairings that get some love (Blink/Race, Jack/Spot, etc.). This story showcases two of the lesser popular characters: Swifty and Bumlets. I think between them they have two entire lines in the entire movie, so they aren't exactly the most-developed characters, but in a way that gives the writer the option to develop them as they wish. This one does not disappoint. It's a one-shot, but has only 4 reviews.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

Here are mine!

Title: PSYC 1520
Type of Work: Fanfiction
Why I'm Reccing It: This was my first multi-chapter fic that I finished. it's only four chapters, but it was still an accomplishment in my eyes.

Title: The Best of Both Worlds
Type of Work: Fanfiction
Why I'm Reccing It: You know how you see those fanfics that haven't been updated in years and know that they're a lost cause? Well, this is mine. After posting five chapters, it went untouched for four years. Then, within a year I posted twelve more chapters and finished the story! I never gave up on it, and that's why it's important to me.

Title: Stephen Sondheim and the American Musical
Type of Work: Essay
Why I'm Reccing It: I'm not sure if this really counts as a fanwork, but I'm a Sondheim fan and I wrote it, so I'm listing it! This is a massive essay I wrote for a theatre class. We were able to choose any theatre-related topic and I chose to write about American Broadway lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim. This man is such an inspiration to me and writing this was easy for me because I was so passionate about the subject.

Title: Angel of Vengeance
Type of Work: Fanfiction
Why I'm Reccing It: This was my massive fic and the first multi-chapter fic that exceeded twenty chapters (clocked in at 42!). It's an NCIS fic centered mostly around McGee, but includes all of the characters. I think it's my best story and feel so proud of it!

Dear writer,

So you've decided to re-imagine the movie Newsies as though Jack had a Mary Sue sister who, based on your summary, probably ends up with David. Okay, fine.

But copying the entire movie script and simply forcing in a few lines about your Mary Sue OC? That is not fine. At least have the decency to actually write your own dialogue. Since you're adding a new character, why not add new scenes? Maybe Jack's sister decides to sell with Blink and they get into some wacky, wild adventure. Maybe she goes to Queens to get the newsies there to join the strike and we get to see that from her point of view.

Either way, please do not expect me to gush over your story when it consists of 90% stolen words.

So...

Be honest: Was I the only one underwhelmed by Catherine Zeta-Jones' performance of "Send in the Clowns"?

And WTF with Ragtime getting all of five seconds?

But Sean Hayes was one of the better hosts we've had. May we keep him?

Oh, and can the fucking sound people get it together next year? I mean, it was better than last year's train wreck, but still!

Second, over on Broadway Abridged Gil has finally posted an abridgement of Les Miserable. And yes the Colleen mentioned in the entry is me.

They called a couple of hours ago. I got the job.

I have to admit that, as much as I am annoyed now that I only got to spend 3 weeks at home, I'll regret it if I turn this down. It's $300 a month plus free board (I'm sharing an apartment with someone else, but I have my own room). Hopefully I'll be here longer for Christmas.

Also, it looks like I won't have to have the surgery after all. However, I think I'm going to try and get the cyst removed sometimes soon anyway just because it may pose a problem later on and I'd rather do it while I'm still covered by my mom's insurance plan.

Ok, so a couple of things have happened:

First, last night I was flossing and I was using one of those things you use when you have braces or a permenant retainer (which I have on my bottom teeth). Anyway, it got stuck somehow and I couldn't get it loose. Finally, I just took a hold of it and yanked...and my bottom retainer popped out partially. I didn't want to leave it like that, so I just yanked the entire thing out. I guess I'll have to go see an orthidontist sometime. It feels very strange to not have anything there when I run my tongue along the teeth.

Second, this morning I finally got a call about the RA thing. It turns out I don't have the job yet. He told me that one of the RAs decided to switch schools and I am one of the top three alternates. So he asked me some questions andthen he said he was going to ask the other two alternates the same questions and they'd get back to me. If I get it, I need to be there by monday which sucks.

I kind of hope I don't get it. I know it's wrong of me, but I really do. I haven't gotten to see anyone yet! Besides which, if I am one of the top three alternates, I have a feeling that, if I don't get it this time, at some point during the year they'll call me and ask me to come in. I'm sure at least two other people are going to leave/get fired/graduate before the entire year is up.

*sigh* I guess I should hope that I do get it though.

PS New Hairspray icon! Zac Efron hott likewhoa! *swoons*
sondheimmcgeek: (little miss sunshine)
I went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix today with my dad.

I love Neville Longbottom. That is all.

Also, I'm considering changing my LJ username, but I can't think of a good name to change it to. I could try broadwaybookworm (though it may be taken). Any suggestions?

I fucking knew it!

So remember how I applied for an RA position in April/May? Remember how I was told I'd recieve a letter regardless of whether or I actually recieved a position, but I never got a letter?

Seriously, I told Danielle and my mom "I bet that a week or two before I need to be up there for training I'm going to get a call from them saying I've got the job."

Well yesterday morning I got a call from the residence life center. At first I thought it was about payment for my dorm or something. Then I thought it might be about the RA position.

It was. They're offering me a position. I need to be up there by August 6th, giving me much, much less time home than I thought I would get. And I haven't seen anyone! Sucks. But it is a job and I do get to live in my own room alone.

*sigh* I fucking knew it!

"WAT IZ THU NAME OF THU 2 STRS IN DIRTY DANCIN"

(though amusingly, someone else posted a question in which they attack this question)

"In what movie r 3 ex girl friends trying to get revendge in?" (this from a supposed 36-year-old)

"in witch movie did one of the actors move from one Africa to
here, and have to go to a new high school?" (also supposed 36-year-old)

"who voice under of zack in the movie ant bully?" (27-year-old)

*sigh* Why do morons run rampant upon the earth?
sondheimmcgeek: (little miss sunshine)
Ok, so on flixters.com they have this "Never-Ending Movie Quiz" (who has 10300 points on it? Oh, yeah me!)

Anywho, the questions are all submitted by users and every so often you get a "question" in which someone says "So I got this question and I think the answer was wrong!!! do you agree with me!?!?!?!" and if you say you do, you get points, if you say you don't you don't get points. So I got this one:

I got a question asking who played the title role in Hook and they said Dustin Hoffman, but if you ask me it was Robin Williams, wasn't it? So what do you think?

A) No, it was Dustin Hoffman
B) You're right, it was Robin Williams!

Me, thinking it's a trick question, choose A) which turns out to be the wrong answer. What pisses me off is that you can't send a message to the person who created the question telling them they are wrong. But honestly, what the fuck? Does she not know what the term "title role" means? Obviously not.

Oh, and people really need to check their spelling. Seriously, there are just some things that are more than typos.

PS If anyone can get me any of the following albums for free, I'd really appreciate it!:

Curtains
Spring Awakening
Grey Gardens
Hairspray (2007 Movie)
sondheimmcgeek: (Reefer Madness)
So guess who saw Hairspray today! Yeah, that would be me. My mom and I caught the movie this afternoon.

Previews:

Stardust-Looks like a cross between Willow and Hocus Pocus. All I could think the entire time while I watched it was "WTF Robert DeNiro?"

Across the Universe-You know, it's been too long since we've had a rock and roll acid trippy movie and it's The Beatles, so I say thumbs up.

The Golden Compass-It looks pretty interesting, though it isn't necessarily top on my list.

Elizabeth: The Golden Years-I don't know what it is, but something about Queen Elizabeth just really interests me. Maybe because she was a headstrong woman surviving in a man's world.

August Rush-I definitely want to see this one.

Rush Hour 3-...Why?
